To Researchers in Spina Bifida:
Please be on the lookout for a CDC funding opportunity to be announced in December, 2009. All potential applicants must have access to a representative sample of persons with Spina Bifida in a defined population.

Aims of the study will be to:
  • Assess survival characteristics
  • Identify patterns of hospital utilization, including inpatient, outpatient and emergency department visits and reasons for the visits
  • Assess whether people affected by spina bifida are at increased risk of developing certain conditions, specifically cancer and psychiatric disorders.
  • Assess whether the variation in employment and independence achieved by adults affected by spina bifida is explained in part by the frequency and intensity of the secondary conditions they experience earlier in life.

This notice is posted to ensure equal advance notice to all potentially interested parties.
